This week, Adobe’s Miguel Sousa is here at Reading. Miguel is an MATD alumnus, and he’s offering a whirlwind introduction to the Adobe Font Developer Kit for OpenType (AFDKO). It seems that he spent the previous week giving a similar workshop in The Hague. I’m sure that most readers are already familiar with these tools, but if you aren’t, you can learn more about the tools—and even download the AFDKO—directly from the source. The process of generating fonts and font families with the AFDKO is very different from just plain FontLab, but it also seems more powerful and specific. Adobe finishes all of its OpenType fonts this way, I believe. Using commands in the MacOS X Terminal is a scary plunge, activating a different part of the mind. Maybe that’s what learning is.

I felt the Reading spirit all the way across the Atlantic. I felt a little guilty as Miguel told me the day after that he ran a little behind that day. Nonetheless, I had a huge smile on my face after seeing the sign.
I just wonder if it was a good week of workshopping?
The week was really intense, Tiffany, but I think that we were all glad to have Miguel with us. Where else would we have learned all about the FDK?
