5 Uhr T—I guess that this should be translated as 5 o’clock T, or Type at Five… In any case, it is a new lecture series taking place this January and February at the Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) in Frankfurt am Main. The topics revolve around different aspects of typography. Lectures are open to the public, and hope to help establish the academy as a location for typographic discourse.

The series was initiated by Peter Reichard, a principal at TYPOSITION. in Offenabch and typography instructor at the AVA. The first lecture takes place on January 21, featuring Lars Harmsen of Slanted magazine. Next up is Prof. Ralf de Jong on January 27. I’m batting third, on February 18, and I hope to see lots of happy area faces in the audience.

Each lecture begins at 5pm in the “Aula” of the Academy of Visual Arts, which you can find at Ostparkstraße 47–49 in Frankfurt. Below are more details:

January 21, 2009—Lars Harmsen
Slanted – Das Gefühl Typografie. Vom Weblog zum Magazin.

Lars Harmsen holds a German diplom in graphic design and is the managing director of the Karlsruhe studio MAGMA Brand Design. In 1996, he founded the Volcano-Type foundry, whose library currently includes over 200 typefaces. He founded the blog Slanted in 2004, and since 2005, he has published a typography magazine under the same name. Beginning this year, Slanted will be issued four times per year.

January 27, 2009—Prof. Ralf de Jong
Schriftwechsel

Ralf de Jong is a renowned book designer and author of titles such as Detailtypografie and Schriftwechsel. In 2007, he became the professor for typography at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

February 18, 2009—Dan Reynolds
Weshalb haben wir so viele Druckschriften?

Dan Reynolds is an American working for Linotype. He studied graphic design in the US and holds an MA in typeface design from the University of Reading in the UK. He writes a lot, and designs sometimes, too.
